Best list-build and lookalike sources before Clay (2026)

You're here because Clay is not the list source. Operators who treat it like a database burn Data Credits and still bounce.

Operator notesAnonymous GTM operatorsWe run the stack we recommend.

pick this stack

Default AI Ark for lookalike and cheap TAM. Default Apollo for mainstream US filters plus sequences plus dialer. Default Sales Nav for title and account precision, often with AI Ark. Clay enriches. It does not replace the source.

  • AI Ark wins lookalike and semantic list-build, plus cheap first-pass email.
  • Apollo wins broad US filters plus list, send, and dial in one seat.
  • Sales Nav wins title and account precision and the warm graph. Enrich elsewhere.
  • Clay wins enrichment and orchestration after the list exists. Not a source pick.
  • Common stack is AI Ark or Apollo or Sales Nav, then Clay with your own keys, then Smartlead or Instantly.
  • FullEnrich belongs on gaps and mobiles after list-build, not on this shortlist.
  • Trust attributed percentages only as author claims. Test your ICP.

MethodHow we scored these tools▾

Ranked source and lookalike motions only. Clay stays the enrich layer in the sections. Sales Navigator is discussed for precision even though it is not a ranked catalog pick. FullEnrich is treated as resolve, not lookalike. or Sales Nav seat prices. Attributed agency percentages stay labeled.

buy if

  • You need to choose where people and companies come from before Clay enrich.
  • You will separate source cost from enrich cost and sender cost.
  • You want lookalike and semantic TAM called out separately from Apollo filters.
  • You can A/B 100 to 500 of your own rows before trusting any blog percentage.

skip if

  • Skip this if you only need a Chrome extension to show an email address.
  • Skip this if you want Clay ranked as the list database. It is not.
  • Skip this if you want FullEnrich on a lookalike shortlist. It resolves gaps and mobiles.
  • Skip this if you want a published find-rate leaderboard treated as fact.
  • Skip this if you refuse to enrich Sales Nav exports and expect verified emails in-product.

Sales Navigator as the precision peer

LinkedIn Sales Navigator is not a ranked pick on this site, and we are not inventing seat prices. Confirm live LinkedIn pricing before you budget. The job is still real: role and title precision, ABM account lists, and the relationship graph.

Pick Sales Nav when you need a title and account sniper or warm paths. Export, then enrich via Chrome finders, Prospeo one-by-one, or Clay CSV or HTTP. It does not give you bulk email or mobile in-product.

Motion cost is the seat plus downstream enrich credits. Teams often run it with AI Ark, not instead of it.

When each source wins

Pick the source from the stuck job. Do not buy all three and hope the list gets cleaner.

  • Pick AI Ark when you need lookalike or semantic accounts from best customers, then Clay with your own keys on the people.
  • Pick Apollo when you need a broad US list plus filters this week on 1 to 2 seats. Waterfall misses in Clay or FullEnrich, or keep Apollo sequences at small scale.
  • Pick Sales Nav when you need title and account precision, ABM, and warm paths. Export, then Prospeo one-by-one or Clay enrich.
  • Pick AI Ark plus Sales Nav, then a Clay cheap-first cascade, when you are a high-volume agency building TAM.
  • Pick Apollo or AI Ark first, then a Clay waterfall or FullEnrich on empties and mobiles, when you want a cheap first-pass email at 50 to 60 percent and then the gaps.
  • Resolve mobiles in FullEnrich when coverage is critical, especially in the EU. Do not use AI Ark alone for that job.
  • Skip all three as primary if you only need a Chrome email reveal.

Source, then Clay, then sender

The list has to exist before Clay is useful. Source people and companies first, enrich second, verify third, send fourth.

  • Source in AI Ark, Apollo, or Sales Nav, plus or minus a CRM or CSV pull.
  • Enrich in Clay with LeadMagic, Prospeo, BetterContact, or FullEnrich, and stop email and mobile on the first valid.
  • Verify with ZeroBounce, MillionVerifier, or the vendor's verify-at-export.
  • Send on Smartlead or Instantly. Keep Apollo sequences only at small scale.

Three production stacks follow that order:

  • Lookalike into a Clay cascade: AI Ark plus Sales Nav, then cheap finders, then BetterContact.
  • Apollo as the cheap net, then the hard remainder on Clay or FullEnrich.
  • AI Ark for the list, then FullEnrich mobiles when you need phone depth.

Clay is enrich, not source

Clay Launch starts around $185 a month, or $167 on annual. Bring-your-own-key skips Data Credits. Actions still burn. Failed enrich is 0. That is enrich math, not source math.

Pick Clay for waterfall columns, scoring, Claygent, and the handoff to Instantly or Smartlead. Do not pick Clay to build the TAM from scratch without an upstream database, Nav, AI Ark, or CSV pull.

Using Clay marketplace credits as the database is the expensive mistake operators keep roasting. See the Clay waterfall providers guide and the Clay vs Apollo compare.

Who should skip this

Skip this page when you are not stuck on where the people come from.

Clay is not a list database. FullEnrich fills email and mobile gaps. It is not a lookalike source.

If you refuse to enrich a Sales Nav export, you will not get verified emails in-product. Do not use Apollo alone as the waterfall. Do not buy Clay Growth expecting it to replace AI Ark or Apollo sourcing.

AI Ark vs Apollo for list-build?▾

AI Ark is lookalike and semantic plus cheap credits. Apollo is filters plus sequences plus a dialer seat. Different stuck jobs. Many teams use one as source and Clay for the hard remainder.

Does AI Ark replace Sales Navigator?▾

No. Agency writeups pair both. Lookalike depth plus Nav filters and graph.

Is Clay a list source?▾

No. It is an orchestrator and enrich layer. Bring Apollo, AI Ark, Sales Nav, or a CSV upstream.

Do I need both Apollo and Clay?▾

Common. Apollo source, then Clay enrich, then a dedicated sender. Apollo alone is not a pure waterfall API.

When is Sales Nav alone enough?▾

ABM and title precision sourcing. You still need enrich for email and mobile before send.

Is AI Ark a waterfall?▾

No. Single database plus verify-at-export. Cascade long-tail and phones elsewhere.

Where do mobiles go after list-build?▾

AI Ark mobile at 5 is cheap and fast in agency bake-offs. FullEnrich for EU and US coverage depth. Gate dials to call-ready ICP.

Who sends after the list exists?▾

Smartlead or Instantly at scale. Apollo sequences are okay small. Instantly is a sequencer pick on this site.

next step

If lookalike TAM is stuck, open AI Ark and pull a test set into Clay. If you need filters plus a dialer this week on 1 to 2 seats, open Apollo. If title and account precision is the bottleneck, buy Sales Nav and enrich the export. Wire stop-on-valid enrich via the Clay waterfall providers guide, then pick a sequencer. Do not pretend Clay replaced the source.
