Clay
List buildGTM orchestration and provider marketplace. Elite workflow layer. Overpriced as a data reseller without your own keys.
The verdict
Clay is an elite orchestrator and an overpriced data reseller if you buy enrichment only through its marketplace. Launch sits at $185 per month.
Build the waterfalls and logic here, buy the data through your own provider keys, and never cascade an unqualified table end to end.
What operators say
“Stage your enrichment. Don’t burn Clay credits enriching bad leads. ... The cheapest Clay credit is the one you never spend.”
“85% of Clay workflows fail... enrichment accuracy sits at 35-40%. ... jump from 40% to 85%+ just by fixing the anchor points.”
“If Clay was a public company, I’d short the stock. ... paying $920/month to Clay... replaced... for ~$30/month in API costs. ... 91% cost reduction.”
Best for
GTM engineers and agencies building custom waterfalls, signals, Claygent research, and CRM or HTTP hooks on Growth and above.
Not for
Solo SDRs who only need a Chrome LinkedIn email reveal, or anyone treating Clay as a volume data reseller without bring-your-own-key.
Pricing truth
Launch is $185 per month ($167 annual). Growth is $495 per month ($446 annual). Dual meter: Actions plus Data Credits. Failed enrichments cost 0. Bring-your-own-key skips Data Credits, but Actions still burn. Checked 13 Sep 2026.
When we use it
- Build multi-provider email and mobile waterfalls with run conditions and provider provenance on every cell.
- Score, personalize, and route after you buy the underlying data cheaper outside the Clay marketplace.
- Keep job-change, intent, and Claygent research in the same table workflow as enrichment.
- Skip it when a solo SDR only needs a LinkedIn email reveal and nothing else.
How to wire it
- Connect provider keys, order cheap-first, and run later columns only when the prior cell is empty.
- ICP-filter and stage rows first. Never cascade the whole unqualified table.
- Run managed finders for the find step, then import into Clay for logic, scoring, and sequencer handoff.
- Normalize LinkedIn URL and company domain before providers fire. Bad anchors tank accuracy.
Margin notes
- Bring-your-own-key skips Data Credits, but Actions still burn on every run.
- Condition fallbacks on empty cells. Ungated columns multiply cost across the table.
- Phone enrichment needs paid Launch or higher. Free has no phones.
- CRM sync and HTTP API are gated to Growth and above.
- Track cost per valid contact, not cost per row enriched.
