GTM engineer, explained · what the job builds and what a starter stack costs

A GTM engineer builds a sales team’s tools and data flow. A small team starts with Smartlead and InboxKit for $69 a month. A bigger team swaps in Premium Inboxes and adds SearchApi. See what each stack costs.

The short answer

A GTM engineer is the person who builds a sales team’s tools and data flows. GTM is short for go to market, the plan a company uses to find and reach new customers. The GTM engineer wires that plan together: the tool that holds the contact list, the tool that sends the first message, the mailboxes that message comes from, and the tool that researches an account before anyone reaches out.

Pick a ten mailbox stack with InboxKit for a small team starting cold email. Pick a thirty mailbox stack with Premium Inboxes once a team needs more inboxes.

Two of the top ten search results that try to define this job are Apollo’s own pages, one giving a definition, one pricing what the job pays. A page from cleanlist.ai, another sales data company, defines the role too. A reader looking for a plain definition keeps landing on a sales page.

No dated, named source backs a salary number for this role. What a starter stack costs for month one does have a real price, though.

What a GTM engineer builds

A GTM engineer’s day runs through a small set of tools instead of one big platform. One tool holds the contact list: names, companies, email addresses. A second tool sends the first message, typically by cold email, mail sent to people who never asked for it. A third tool holds the mailboxes, the email accounts that cold email goes out from, and keeps them warmed up so mail does not land as junk. A fourth tool researches a company or a person before the first message goes out. It pulls pages from the web or runs searches for fresh information.

Every mailbox also has a sending limit. Premium Inboxes puts that limit at 15 cold emails per inbox per day. Google or Microsoft throttle mail once a mailbox goes over that limit. Throttling can slow or block mail from the account. More sending volume calls for more mailboxes instead of faster sending from the same one.

The job is picking these tools, wiring them together, and watching what each one costs every month as sending volume grows.

A starter stack for month one

A starter stack, the small set of tools a GTM engineer runs together in the first month, covers sending, mailboxes and research.

This starter stack skips a contact database on purpose. A GTM engineer may inherit a list already, from a shared customer database or a past campaign, before picking a database tool at all. Sending, mailboxes and research are the three costs in month one, regardless of where the contact list comes from.

Smartlead’s Base plan costs $39 a month billed monthly. It comes with 2,000 contacts, 6,000 email sends and 2,000 verified emails included.

Mailboxes come from one of two places. The choice depends on the mailbox count. InboxKit charges one flat rate per mailbox with no minimum order and no plan to pick: $3.00 a mailbox a month billed monthly, or $2.50 a mailbox a month billed yearly. That rate holds at any volume, so it suits a small, single digit mailbox count. Both providers also expect a domain, the web address the mail comes from. Keep it separate from a company’s main site. Then a new domain’s bad start cannot hurt the main site.

Once a team needs more mailboxes, Premium Inboxes fits better. Its Start Up tier costs $3.50 per inbox every 4 weeks, with no monthly commitment, for 1 to 249 inboxes.

Research can start free. Firecrawl, a tool that turns a web page into clean text a program can read, gives 1,000 credits a month free, a credit being one page pulled, with no card required. Once that free tier runs out, SearchApi’s Developer plan costs $40 a month billed monthly for 10,000 searches. It also gives 100 free requests before the paid plan starts.

The math

The math: ten mailboxes is a normal starting count for a small team. Ten mailboxes on InboxKit cost 10 × $3.00 = $30 a month billed monthly. Add Smartlead Base at $39 a month billed monthly and Firecrawl’s free tier at $0 a month, and the small volume stack comes to $39 + $30 + $0 = $69 a month.

Thirty mailboxes is a normal count once sending volume grows past a handful of inboxes. Thirty inboxes on Premium Inboxes’ Start Up tier cost 30 × $3.50 = $105 every 4 weeks. Add the same Smartlead Base at $39 a month billed monthly and SearchApi’s Developer plan at $40 a month billed monthly, and those two add up to $39 + $40 = $79 a month billed monthly. The larger volume stack runs $79 a month plus $105 every 4 weeks, and the first bill, when both land in the same month, comes to $39 + $105 + $40 = $184.

Both stacks run the same sending tool. The difference is the mailbox count and whether research still fits inside a free tier.

Who claims the title, and who does the job

The title spread fast enough in 2026 that people outside the job started using it too. On September 29, 2026, a commenter named d1l wrote on Hacker News, “…I was on a call this morning with our go-getter sales guy (he’s calling himself a gtm engineer now) where he talked about alternately buying Reddit comments and going and placing flyers on car windshields himself at offices of potential customers. Our CEO was enthusiastic.”

Anyone hiring for the role runs into the same confusion. A job post titled GTM engineer might ask for someone who writes code that talks to other programs, or it might only want a sales rep who knows how to use a spreadsheet. Reading the actual task list in a posting is worth more than the title on it.

The job title is new. The definition is still being written by whoever ranks highest in a search result that day, by vendors selling into the role, and by anyone willing to put the title on a business card.

What to do next

Pick one stack for month one. Ten mailboxes with InboxKit and Firecrawl’s free tier, alongside Smartlead, run $69 a month. Thirty mailboxes with Premium Inboxes and a paid SearchApi plan, alongside the same Smartlead plan, run $79 a month plus $105 every 4 weeks, with a first bill of $184. Read the fuller GTM engineer stack breakdown before buying more mailboxes than month one needs. Then tap Try Smartlead to set up the sending tool both stacks share.
